Bruno Malfacine

Bruno da Silva Malfacine was born on August 28, 1986, in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He began Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 1998 at age 11 after encouragement from an uncle who trained, first studying under Carlos Santana. When Santana stopped coaching, Malfacine's early progress briefly stalled at orange belt before his family support and competitive drive brought him back to the mats under Vinicius Amaral at Academia Game Fight, an affiliate of the Gama Filho / GFT lineage.

Under Amaral, Malfacine earned his blue, purple, brown, and black belts, receiving his black belt in late 2006. His colored-belt resume already pointed toward an unusually dominant career: IBJJF World titles at purple and brown belt, Pan gold as a purple belt, and Brazilian Nationals titles dating back to his youth and juvenile years. The nickname "Bad Boy" reportedly came from training partners when he was still a child, a contrast to the small roosterweight frame he carried into elite adult divisions.

Malfacine's black-belt era became the reference point for the roosterweight division. After winning his first IBJJF World Championship in 2007, he moved to Sao Paulo in late 2008 to train with Fabio Gurgel at Alliance, where he became one of the team's defining champions. From 2007 through 2018 he won ten IBJJF World Championship gold medals at roosterweight, with Caio Terra serving as his central rival and one of the few athletes to interrupt the run in 2008 and 2013.

His 2018 Worlds campaign is the iconic closing chapter of that reign: FloGrappling reported that Malfacine submitted all four opponents, finished Rodnei Barbosa by armbar in the final, and left his black belt on the mat after securing a record tenth same-weight-class world title. He later returned for select IBJJF appearances, taking bronze at the 2019 Worlds and silver at the 2021 Worlds, evidence that the division's newer generation still had to go through him.

Away from the IBJJF circuit, Malfacine briefly moved into professional MMA and went 3-0, with all three wins by submission across Shooto Brazil and Brave CF. He later focused on coaching and academy building, opening Alliance Orlando in Florida while continuing to represent the Alliance lineage. His game is remembered for unusually high finishing pressure in a small-weight class: butterfly guard, armbars, back attacks, bow-and-arrow chokes, and lower-body attacks all show up repeatedly in his documented match record.
