Cole Abate

Cole Abate is an American Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Guilherme Mendes and one of the defining AOJ prospects of the 2020s. Born on November 16, 2004, in Beaumont, Texas, and raised in San Antonio, he started jiu-jitsu at age five under Rodrigo Pinheiro. Competition became a weekly part of his childhood, and by the time he reached the teen and juvenile divisions he was already collecting major IBJJF medals and drawing attention as one of the strongest American youth athletes of his generation.

In 2019, Abate moved with his family to Costa Mesa, California, to train full-time at Art of Jiu-Jitsu under Guilherme and Rafael Mendes. BJJ Heroes notes that he arrived at AOJ as a green belt, then received his blue, purple, brown, and black belts from Gui Mendes. The move also put him into AOJ's structured juvenile-to-adult pipeline, where his technical game grew around sharp guard work, back attacks, pressure passing, and later a no-gi leg-lock layer that made him dangerous across rule sets.

His mainstream breakout came at the 2021 ADCC East Coast / North American Trials, where he won the 66 kg professional division as a 16-year-old blue belt. The run included victories over established names such as Deandre Corbe, Keith Krikorian, and Estevan Martinez, making Abate the youngest male athlete to win ADCC North American Trials and earning him a 2022 ADCC World Championship berth. He had already shown pro-level promise on FloGrappling events, including a September 2021 win over Geo Martinez, and the Trials title confirmed that he was not only a juvenile standout but a senior-level threat.

Abate's colored-belt resume stayed unusually dense. He won IBJJF World gold at purple belt in 2022, European Open gold at purple in January 2023, and the 2023 IBJJF World Championship at brown belt before winning the Asian Championship brown-belt lightweight division in Nagoya, Japan, by submission in every match. On July 10, 2023, after that Asian Championship run, Guilherme Mendes promoted him to black belt at age 18.

At black belt, Abate quickly became a title threat in both gi and no-gi. He won the 2024 IBJJF No-Gi Pan Championship and 2024 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, added the 2025 World No-Gi title at lightweight, won the 2025 Brasileiro and the 2025 IBJJF The Crown featherweight bracket, and reached the 2025 IBJJF World Championship podium. In 2026 he took another step by winning the IBJJF Pan Championship and then his first adult black-belt IBJJF World Championship in the featherweight division, defeating Joao Mendes in the semifinal and Samuel Nagai in the final. Outside the IBJJF circuit, he signed with ONE Championship and submitted Shinya Aoki by heel hook in his promotional debut, continuing the same two-rule-set trajectory that made him a rare prospect as a teenager.
