Geo Martinez

Geovanny Martinez, known as Geo or by the nickname Freakazoid, is an American Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Eddie Bravo and one of the defining 10th Planet competitors of the 2010s no-gi boom. Born in San Diego in 1987, Martinez came to grappling unusually late after a life built around breakdancing. BJJ Heroes traces the nickname to his older brother Richie Martinez and their B-boying crew, The Freak Show, with Geo's flexibility, balance, strength, and spatial awareness carrying directly into his jiu-jitsu style.

Martinez began training in 2011 after he was asked to teach breakdancing to Ryan Ford's son at the 10th Planet gym in Vista, California, receiving free jiu-jitsu classes in return. He first developed under Sean Bollinger at 10th Planet Vista, became hooked within a few sessions, and was soon competing on the West Coast no-gi circuit. As a purple belt he began training more directly with Eddie Bravo at 10th Planet headquarters; Bravo awarded him his brown belt and then his black belt in January 2014, roughly three years after Martinez first started training.

His black-belt breakout came immediately. In 2014 Martinez won the ADCC US Trials at 66 kg, submitting through the bracket, then captured the first Eddie Bravo Invitational featherweight title by beating Toni Pinedo, Erick Rios, Brandon Walensky, and Jeff Glover. Later that year he won EBI 2 at bantamweight, finishing all four matches and defeating Fabbio Passos in the final. BJJ Heroes and BJJ Fanatics also list the 2014 Gracie Nationals among his major titles, while BJJ Heroes notes that IBJJF No-Gi Worlds entry was unavailable to him that season because he did not meet IBJJF time-in-rank rules.

Martinez stayed central to elite no-gi through ADCC, EBI, Quintet, KASAI, Polaris, WNO, Subversiv, AIGA, and CJI-era events. At ADCC 2015 he beat Alexandre Vieira and Jeff Glover before losing in the semifinal and bronze-medal match at 66 kg, then returned to ADCC Worlds in 2017, 2019, and 2022; 10th Planet Oceanside described 2022 as his fourth ADCC appearance. He added a third EBI title at EBI 10 in 2016, winning a final over Eddie Cummings, and was part of Team 10th Planet's Quintet II championship run in 2018, where his guillotine win over the much larger Haisam Rida became one of his signature team-grappling moments.

As a coach and stylist, Martinez represents the Freak Brothers branch of 10th Planet alongside Richie Martinez. The official 10th Planet Oceanside and San Diego sites list Geo and Richie as coaches of 10th Planet Freaks in San Diego County, with Geo associated with the Oceanside location. His game is submission-first and distinctly 10th Planet: the truck, calf slicers, twisters, kimuras, rubber guard, guillotines, leg locks, and his later Bear Trap guard work.
