Kaynan Duarte

Kaynan Casemiro Duarte was born on January 24, 1998, in Pederneiras, Sao Paulo, Brazil. His first martial-art exposure came through judo in his pre-teen years, before a cousin's jiu-jitsu practice pulled him toward BJJ. Duarte's first instructor was Jose Luis, widely known as Ze Cavalo, in his hometown. As his juvenile results improved, he made regular trips to Sao Paulo to train at Cicero Costa's PSLPB academy, then moved through Bauru under Paulo Ledesma, whose Atos connection became the bridge to the next stage of Duarte's career.

In 2016 Duarte traveled to Atos headquarters in San Diego, California, after Andre Galvao invited him around the UAEJJF Los Angeles Grand Slam and IBJJF World No-Gi season. Galvao became his long-term coach and promoted him to brown belt after a 2017 IBJJF Worlds purple-belt title, then to black belt in 2018 after Duarte won the brown-belt heavyweight and absolute divisions at the IBJJF World Championship. The promotions captured the arc of his colored-belt run: he was already an ADCC Brazil Trials winner as a purple belt and an IBJJF World, World No-Gi, Pan, European, Abu Dhabi World Pro, and Spyder Invitational champion before entering the black-belt ranks.

Duarte's black-belt breakout came quickly. In 2019 he won the IBJJF Pan Championship, UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro, Kasai Pro 5, Spyder Invitational Grand Prix, and the ADCC World Championship +99 kg division, beating Eldar Rafigaev, Yuri Simoes, Marcus Almeida "Buchecha", and Nick Rodriguez. His 2019 IBJJF Worlds heavyweight gold was later disqualified after a USADA sanction for ostarine from an in-competition test; USADA stated that the trace amount was consistent with cross-contamination and imposed a one-year period of ineligibility beginning June 2, 2019. Duarte returned to win IBJJF black-belt heavyweight World titles in 2021 and 2022.

No-gi became the setting for his most historic work. Duarte won the 2022 ADCC -99 kg title with victories over Owen Livesey, Elder Cruz, Rafael Lovato Jr., and Craig Jones. At the 2024 ADCC World Championship in Las Vegas he delivered one of the event's great modern runs: -99 kg gold by submitting Daniel Schuardt, Declan Moody, Roberto "Cyborg" Abreu, and Rafael Lovato Jr., then absolute gold with wins over Diego "Pato" Oliveira, Declan Moody, Dante Leon, and Cyborg. Seven of his eight ADCC 2024 wins came by submission, earning him best athlete honors and setting up the 2026 ADCC superfight path.

Technically, Duarte is a heavyweight who does not rely only on size. His best performances combine strong wrestling exchanges, heavy top pressure, opportunistic front-headlock attacks, back takes, and a wide submission range: guillotines, rear naked chokes, armbars, chokes from the back, and leg locks all appear repeatedly in his record. After nearly a decade as one of Atos' defining champions, public reporting in early 2026 said he distanced himself from the Atos association and joined Art of Jiu-Jitsu, while some sponsor material still lists San Diego-based Victory MMA training. The settled throughline remains clear: he is a Galvao black belt and one of the most accomplished ADCC competitors of his generation.
