Rômulo Barral

Rômulo Barral is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhães and one of Gracie Barra's defining medium-heavyweight competitors. Born in Minas Gerais, Brazil, on May 3, 1982, Barral first entered martial arts through taekwondo at age eight and later earned a black belt in the striking art. He began Brazilian jiu-jitsu at 15 at Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte, where Cristiano Lazzarini and Draculino became his first major coaches. His original goal was practical grappling for mixed martial arts, but the gi game became the center of his career, and Draculino promoted him to BJJ black belt in December 2005.

Barral's rise at black belt was immediate. By 2007, GracieMag had tipped him as the number one jiu-jitsu fighter in the world, and his world-title runs made him one of the era's most consistent podium threats. He built his reputation around a technical, aggressive guard - especially spider guard, lasso connections, triangle entries, and cross-choke attacks - while still competing successfully against elite passers and larger absolute-division opponents. BJJ Heroes records more than 100 major grappling wins for Barral, with the majority coming by submission.

His peak results span both gi and no-gi. Barral is widely listed as a five-time IBJJF black-belt World Champion and also won the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship in 2009. At ADCC 2013 in Beijing, he captured the -88 kg world title, defeating Kim Dong, Lucas Leite, Keenan Cornelius, and Rafael Lovato Jr. on his way to gold. He also competed across ADCC editions from 2007 through 2017, remained active in professional grappling into the Fight to Win and Third Coast Grappling era, and briefly fought MMA, going 2-0 with both wins by rear naked choke.

After moving to the United States in the early 2010s, Barral taught in the Los Angeles area before opening Gracie Barra Northridge in August 2011. The academy became a major Gracie Barra competition hub, associated with athletes such as Edwin Najmi and Gabriel Arges and with Barral's long friendship and mentorship of Felipe Pena. In 2024, Draculino promoted Barral to fifth-degree black belt, 19 years after awarding his original black belt. Today he is best known as the founder and head instructor at Gracie Barra Northridge, a BJJ Hall of Fame member, and a coach whose "Everyday Porrada" training ethos is closely tied to his competitive legacy.
