Alexandre "Xande" Ribeiro

Alexandre Couceiro Ribeiro, universally known as Xande, was born on January 20, 1981, in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. He began jiu-jitsu at age ten under the Monteiro Brothers, whose academy helped shape both Xande and his older brother Saulo Ribeiro before the brothers moved into the Rio de Janeiro competition scene. At 18, Xande relocated to Rio to study law and train at Gracie Humaita under Royler Gracie, with Saulo already established as one of the sport's elite competitors. In March 2001, Saulo led Xande's black-belt promotion, closing the loop on a formative brother-student relationship that became one of jiu-jitsu's defining family partnerships.

Xande's black-belt gi career made him one of the most decorated athletes of the modern IBJJF era. He won seven World Jiu-Jitsu Championship black-belt titles: five at weight and two in the absolute division, including double-gold runs in 2006 and 2008 and a late-career world title in 2015. He also won major Pan titles, collected World No-Gi double gold in 2012, and built a reputation for competing across heavyweight, super heavyweight, and open-weight brackets against figures such as Roger Gracie, Braulio Estima, Andre Galvao, Marcelo Garcia, Robert Drysdale, and Demian Maia.

His no-gi resume is equally central to his legacy. Ribeiro won the ADCC World Championship at -99 kg in 2007 and 2009, took absolute silver in 2009, and medaled several more times across ADCC editions from 2005 through 2017. FloGrappling reported his 2024 ADCC Hall of Fame announcement as the first member of that class, noting his ADCC records for most matches and most wins at the event: 43 matches and 30 wins. Outside grappling he briefly fought for Sengoku in Japan, going 2-0 in professional MMA by knockout/TKO, before returning his focus to elite jiu-jitsu competition and coaching.

Technically, Xande is most associated with pressure guard passing, a suffocating top game, and a defensive guard system that became famous for how rarely opponents passed it at black belt. BJJ Heroes records guard passing as his favorite technique and highlights the often-repeated career statistic that his guard was passed only a handful of times in competition. Digitsu and BJJ Fanatics both emphasize the same themes: fundamental pressure, closed-guard and side-closed-guard structure, cross-collar attacks, armbars, and a Diamond Concept of Defense built around frames, posture, and survival before offense.

After years helping build the Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Association and the University of Jiu-Jitsu in San Diego with Saulo, Xande opened a new chapter in 2020 by founding Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu in Austin, Texas. The team name is tied to six values - family, respect, loyalty, discipline, attitude, and honor - and has become the base for his coaching, affiliate network, and mentorship of high-level athletes. Public records and his own Instagram activity list him as a sixth-degree black belt as of 2025, while his current competitive appearances are selective superfights and masters-era returns rather than a full-time tournament schedule.
